Special Technique #1
Current Casting Bridge Pilings
This technique uses strong current to move the lure into the productive
strike zone. Slightly jigging the lure gives it the proper action to lure
fish and helps you keep a tight line.
Use a soft plastic lure rigged on a jighead weighing enough to get the lure
down fast. Two factors must be taken into consideration when sizing the
jighead they are; 1) the speed of the current, and 2) the depth that the lure
will be running. The heavier the jighead, the deeper the lure will run.
Jigheads between 1/2 and 1 ounce will work in most locations.
Cast the lure up, and across the strong current, into still or slower
moving water. After the lure hits the water leave the bail open, put the rod tip
on the water, and rip the rod tip up swiftly. This is an easy and fast way to
put more line out so that the lure drops where it hit the water. If more
line is needed do this again.
Watch the line and count down the lure (it sinks approximately 1’ per second) to
the desired depth. With a tight line, lift your rod tip swiftly to move
the lure into the fast moving current. Keep the rod tip at the 10 o’clock
position. The line will tighten up as the lure gets swept by the current.
Slightly jig the lure while it moves in the current. Keep a tight line
throughout the presentation. If the line stops or you feel a hit set the
hook.
This technique is very productive at the following locations; Calvert Cliff
Nuclear Plant Rips, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, The Bay Bridges, Love
Point, Tolly Point, etc.
