Fishing Report - 1st Week of September 2008
Striped Bass and Bluefish Busting Top Water

Thursday, September 4th, was the most productive trip this week for me on the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay.

For starters we stopped on the eastern shore side of the Chesapeake Bay for an hour of fly casting instructions.  Tyrrell, Peter, and Kelly only needed a refresher course. Before you knew it, they were on the 1st school of striped bass.  Topwater action was non-stop from 6:30AM until 12:15PM.  Only 2 anglers could fly fish so Kelly volunteered to use light tackle.  The largest striper was 22".  The bluefish were in the 2 to 5 pound class.  There were some spanish mackerels mixed in with the bluefish, but they were not looking for bait on the surface.

I hope to see you at the Orvis Retail Store, Richmond, VA, this Saturday, September 13th, from 9AM until 11AM.  Capt. Russ Wilkinson and I will be giving a PowerPoint (slide) presentation covering 'Fly & Light Tackle Fishing the Chesapeake Bay for Striped Bass in all Seasons'.  This presentation will cover: Where to Find Striped Bass Throughout the Entire Year, Fly & Light Tackle Equipment, Techniques Used to Catch Striped Bass, and How & Where to Fish the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT) from Mid-November through January.

Equipment Used This Trip:  Orvis 9 or 10 weight fly rod - Battenkill LA V Large Arbor reel - Striper Wonderline Generation 3 Floating Line

Most Productive Technique:
Cast the fly out, get the rod tip down and just above the water.  Start stripping in 6” increments swiftly.  Keep the fly moving at all times back to the boat.  Striped bass and bluefish will follow and take the fly just before you start your next cast.

Fly Fishing Tip: Feet Placement for Right Hand Casters - Place the left foot in the front of the right foot approximately 30" - vise versa for left hand casters.
