Fishing Report - 1st Week of August 2008 |

I was very excited about going down to the CBBT to guide on the nights of August 4th, 5th, and 6th. It's been a few years since I made a trip down there in the summer, but I remember the excitement we had landing large croakers, sea trout, stripers, and bluefish at night. Fishing the light line was the ticket then and hopefully now. Well as thing went, my clients, Steve Schuman and Steve Drazin, fished hard on the first evening from 3 1/2 hours (in many locations that were productive in the past) without a hook-up, so I suggested we go in and start fresh in the early morning. The next morning we stopped by Chris Tackle Shop and purchased some bait rigs, sinkers, shrimp and squid. After all, this trip was to catch some nice pan fish to take home and lures were not working. We headed up the Bay to fish the shoal off of Plantation Point. A few nice whitings were landed on the first drift. We stayed on the water until 11am and then headed up to Sting Rays to eat lunch. Our next stop was back to the Kiptopeke Inn for a siesta until 3pm before heading across the Bridge-Tunnel to fish the small boat channel for some croakers, and then into Lynnhaven Bay for some red bass. At the small boat channel small bluefish were landed, along with a pompano on 4" Bass Assassins Lures. The following day many croakers were caught making my clients' trip successful.
Species of Fish Caught: black sea bass,
oyster cracker, pompano, bluefish, spot, croaker, flounder, puffer &
Most Productive Lure: Betts, Spec Rig Magnum, in white and pink...this lure is easy to rig and fish with...plus it's very productive. Most Productive Technique: Down & Dirty-Open the bail and get the lure down ON THE BOTTOM as past as possible. Boat Handling: The captain stayed at the helm keeping the boat going forward just fast enough to keep the lures on the bottom. The current at the CBBT is very strong and fast. Handling the boat in this matter will help you catch more fish. It's similar to back trolling, but you keep the boat going up current stern first. Special Thanks: To racn35 (Jamie) for helping me locate many croakers, and to Capt. John Deering for turning me on to the boat handling needed to catch fish when the catching gets tough. Fishing Tip: To really get your reels clean and salt free soak them in Salt Terminator for 24 hours. Rinse them off and oil them. You'll really see the difference in how smooth they operate.
