This week the summer pattern set in for striped bass in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay.  Jim Beh (pictured above), and his fishing partner Mark Hopson (pictured below), did non- stop catching yesterday from 8:15am until 11:00am.  Both anglers were using Helios fly rods teamed with Battenkill Large Arbor reels and Striper Wonder Line Generation 3 floating line.  They were using  top water  flies such as large and small poppers, and a blue and white crease.

For a short period of time the stripers where active 5' below the water surface and would not come to top water to take a fly.  Floating line was still used, but a longer leader of approximately 7' was attached along with a sinking yellow and white 3" clouser tied on a size 2 hook was the hot ticket.

Stripping Techniques:
Top Water
-cast the fly out and strip 2' of line each time very swiftly non-stop all the way back to the boat.  If the stripers are still active and you're not hooking-up, remove the existing popper and install one the next size smaller and slow down the retrieve.

Not Active on Top Water, But Active from 1 to 10 Feet Deep-Attach a 7' leader to the floating line. Tie on a sinking fly, cast it out, and count it down to the desired depth.  Start stripping, 3' of line each strip, then pause for a second to let the fly drop down on top of the fish.  Basically you will be vertically jigging the fly which a times can be a very productive.

Jim and Mark are excellent fly fishers and worked the captain hard, and that's the way I like it.  Thanks fellows!

Trips are now available, giving you a chance to catch striped bass on top water with fly or light tackle equipment, for those who were waiting for this time of year.
